In Memoriam
Jane Herriott, Music to Our Ears

Jane Herriott, our long time Director of Music, became an angel in God's choir on Monday, December 7, 2009.

Jane came to Southern Heights as our choir director in 1973.  She served her church family and the Lord with joy, music, and laughter.

Jane was famous for her fabulous smile and a loving dedication to the “inner musician” she thought was within each of us.  In a disjointed world, Jane and her music program provided a continuity that embraced all who knew her.

We weren’t the only ones who thought she was extraordinary. Jane earned a Mayor’s Arts Award, the Cultural Celebration Award in 2004, for her work with and collaboration on the Diversity Concerts.  The concerts, which included guest artists, staff and student participants, poetry readings, dance, and music from around the world, were performed at the Lied Center.

In 2008, in appreciation of her long time leadership and dedication, the choir, on behalf of the SHPC congregation, honored Jane by commissioning a musical arrangement. The piece, How Can I Keep From Singing, was arranged by Kurt E. von Kampen, Associate Professor of Music at Concordia University in Seward, specifically for the SHPC choir who performed it in her honor in June of that year.

We can't keep from singing when we think of you, Jane.  Your spirit will be forever with us.
